Frequently Asked Questions

About Performances...

Q How far in advance should I make the booking?
A Booking in advance is always recommended. Short notice booking is sometimes possible but please give as much notice as possible to allow the dancer time to prepare a show just for you and your guests.

Q Do you bring your own music player?
A
No, I will bring my music on a CD to play on a system provided by the host(ess) unless otherwise arranged. Louder is better.

Q The performance is a surprise. What should I do when you arrive?
A For surprise performances it is best to have a separate area for me to wait until the performance begins.

Q Is tipping appropriate?
A Yes. Tipping is traditional in Arabic society. Tips may be thrown over the dancer's head like a "money shower," placed in a tip jar or basket if provided, or handed to the performer after the show.

Q What kind of costume will Mary wear?
A Costumes range from traditional floor length dresses decorated with sequins and embroidery that cover the belly to more modern two piece sequined and beaded bedlah sets. If you have a special costume request please discuss this with Mary at the time of booking.

Q I contacted another performer who said they'd dance for half the price, why should I hire you?

A  While you may find a range of prices quoted to you when you are looking for a performer, cheaper does not mean better (although more expensive doesn't guarantee quality either). You want an entertainer with a professional demeanor who has real experience in dance and can guarantee an elegant and fun performance for your guests. A student or novice in a hip scarf or cheap costume that sheds everywhere may not cost much monetarily, but they will cost you in embarrassment and a poor experience. Mary and the dancers she works with are known for their professionalism and elegance in performing and providing the best in bellydance entertainment in the Middle Georgia area. You and your guests deserve quality - don't settle for less!f

About Classes...

Q Do you have to be fat/thin/young to take classes?
A No! Oriental dance is for every body type and every age. In the Middle East, all people use these movements for dance. It is what you, as a person, bring to the dance that makes the dance beautiful.

Q
Will belly dance make me lose weight?

A While a weekly dance lesson or two alone will not automatically cause weight loss, as part of a balanced diet and exercise program, dance class and practice will contribute to healthy weight loss. I personally noticed more toning around my waist when I started dancing and have had students mention positive changes in their body after taking classes.

Belly dance can a wonderful low impact workout as illustrated by the popularity of workout DVDs by twin belly dancers Neena and Veena, the new Fit TV show, Shimmy, and this article on Weight Watchers.
